The calculator below is useful in determining the total impedance of speakers in parallel. It also calculates how the power is shared between the speakers.

If all the speakers have the same impedance, the calculation is relatively simple. If all the speakers in parallel have the same impedance, then the calculation is easy. Simply divide the impedance by the number of speakers in parallel.

For calculations involving speakers in parallel with different impedance, the following formula is required it can be used with speakers of similar impedances too. Simply type the impedance of each speaker into the white boxes or rob anderson the drop-down values. The total impedance will be calculated for the entered speakers.

This is useful as power sharing is a consideration when using speakers with different impedance. This calculates in dB decibels the power level difference between the highest and lowest power as it is shared across the speakers. This shows the power level difference when using speakers with different impedance. The bottom section of the calculator helps in matching the speaker combination with your amplifier. However if you are connecting these speakers to your amplifier, it may be helpful to input the amplifier power and the associated speaker impedance.

In the specifications for your amplifier, it should say something like:. Amplifier power: 80 watts continuous average power 4 ohms 2 channels driven, THD 0. This tells you the maximum continuous power the amplifier will deliver into a 6 ohm load is 80 watts.

In the calculator below, for this example, you type in 80 for the power and 6 for the impedance. Be aware, some specifications state RMS power rather than continuous power. These are effectively the same. The calculator will display the effective power of the amplifier for the calculated total impedance of the series speakers.

2 3 ohm speaker

My car came with a basic no frills generic junk audio system, the head unit is probably under 20 watts power, more like under One of the two rear deck speakers started sounding scratchy so I decided to replace them both.

Without much thought I bought a pair of Rockford-Fosgate Punch 4-ohm. After ripping out the rear deck The idiots who designed this car made it that way! Now I'm wondering if I've been a real idiot in replacing 2-ohm with 4-ohm speakers!

Low-frequency sound is what is commonly known as bass. While a subwoofers is a must-have sound equipment for a bass enthusiast, most people get confused about terms such as wattage, impedance, and resistance. Resistance, to be specific, is a term hardly known by most people.

Basically, resistance is a measure of the opposition to the flow of electric current by an electric circuit. Resistance is denoted in ohms.

Subwoofers are usually fed with an audio signal in the form of an electric current from a head unit or amplifier. They have a certain level of resistance to an audio signal. Most subwoofers available today have a resistance rating of either 2 ohms or 4 ohms. Although your stereo or amp may work just okay with either a 2 or 4 ohm sub, it would help to know which would work best for the best bass quality.

When buying a subwoofer and notice a subwoofer rated as 2 ohm, it means that its resistance is level as at 2 ohms. As such, an amplifier is able to feed it with more power without much resistance.

Since the resistance is low, it means that the sub will be louder. However, it consumes more power due to its minimal resistance, and this leads to lower quality in bass.

A subwoofer with a resistance rating of 4 ohms means that it has higher resistance. As such, it reproduces less sound due to its high resistance. However, its high resistance means that it consumes less power from an amplifier. You can wire subwoofers either in series or parallel.

On the other hand, if you wire subwoofers in parallel, the total resistance is the resistance of one subwoofer divided by the total number of subwoofers. This means that wiring subwoofers in parallel lowers the total resistance. While most subwoofers have a single voice coil, others come with dual voice coils.

You can have a sub with a dual voice coil where each voice coil has a resistance of 2 ohms or 4 ohms. Now that you know the key differences between 2 ohm and 4 ohm subs, including how wiring multiple subwoofers affect the total resistance, it can be easier to tell which option is better.

Basically, either option is good. If you want bass at a moderate volume and in the best quality, then a 4 ohm subwoofer will be your best bet. On the other hand, if you want the loudest bass, then consider a 2-ohm amplifier and if you have multiple subs, then connect them in series for less resistance and thus more loudness. Getting the kind of bass you want in your car is not a matter of hooking up just any subwoofer you come across in the market. There is a lot more that matters. Basically, a 2 ohm subwoofer demands less power from the amp and tends to deliver louder bass.
